The Antioch Police Department in Northern California has agreed to federal oversight for five years following reports of racist and sexist text messages sent by officers. This agreement comes after a civil rights investigation sparked public outrage.
As part of the agreement, a law enforcement consulting firm will review and update the department's policies on hiring, training, use of force, community policing, and other areas.
"A police department that discriminates based on race and other protected classes undermines both public safety and public confidence," said U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California, Ismail J. Ramsey, in a news release. "Today's agreement will help ensure that policing in Antioch is done constitutionally and will help restore public trust."
The Antioch Police Department acknowledged the settlement in a statement on Friday, emphasizing its cooperation with the Justice Department as a reflection of its commitment to fostering trust, transparency, and accountability.
