A New Zealand woman, Sarah Shaw, and her son are detained at a US immigration center after being stopped at the Canada-US border. Her friend, Victoria Besancon, says Shaw is wrongly treated.
Shaw, a Washington state resident, was returning from taking her older children to New Zealand. ICE detained her and her son, transporting them to a Texas processing center. Besancon describes the experience as "terrifying."
Shaw's visa combines an employment visa and an I-360 visa. She recently received a renewal letter, unaware the I-360 was still pending. Border officials could have used humanitarian parole, according to Besancon, who also claims Shaw's son is being detained illegally.
Besancon, a retired US Navy officer, is appalled by the treatment of Shaw, who contributes to American society. The situation is financially and emotionally draining.
Shaw's union, the WFSE, demands her release. The union opposes ICE practices. New Zealand's foreign affairs ministry is in contact with Shaw.

I can’t believe this is happening in America. We should be more understanding of individual circumstances.

It’s time to reform how immigration laws are enforced. Sarah’s story is a prime example of how broken it is.

The fact that New Zealand's foreign ministry is involved shows how serious this situation is. We need to take a stand!

Laws are in place for a reason. Her detention isn’t an injustice; it’s a necessary procedure.
