Turkey Condemns Israel's West Bank Actions, Warns Against Two-State Solution Erosion

Ankara Voices Strong Opposition to Israeli Measures

Turkey has issued a strong condemnation of Israel's recent actions in the occupied Palestinian territories, specifically targeting measures approved by Israel's Security Cabinet in the West Bank. Ankara warned that these decisions risk undermining the prospects for a two-state solution, a long-standing framework for peace in the region.

Speaking during a weekly press briefing on Thursday, Turkish Defense Ministry spokesperson Zeki Akturk criticized Israel for continuing 'ceasefire violations' and for its decisions aimed at imposing a 'new legal and administrative status' on the occupied West Bank. Akturk emphasized that such measures constitute a 'clear violation of international law' and could damage ongoing efforts toward a negotiated settlement.

International Law and De Facto Annexation Concerns

The Israeli Security Cabinet's decisions, approved on Sunday, are designed to change the legal and civil framework in the occupied West Bank to strengthen Israeli control. These moves have been described by several leaders as a step toward 'de facto annexation' of the occupied Palestinian territory.

Turkey's condemnation aligns with a broader international outcry. On Monday, the foreign ministers of Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Indonesia, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates issued a joint statement. This statement 'condemned in the strongest terms' Israel's 'illegal decisions and measures' aimed at 'imposing unlawful Israeli sovereignty, entrenching settlement activity, and enforcing a new legal and administrative reality in the occupied West Bank,' thereby accelerating attempts at its 'illegal annexation and the displacement of the Palestinian people.'

The joint declaration reaffirmed that 'Israel has no sovereignty over the occupied Palestinian territory' and stressed that such actions 'fuel violence and conflict in the region.'

Undermining the Two-State Solution

The international community, including the United Nations and the European Union, has also expressed grave concerns. UN Secretary-General António Guterres voiced alarm over the Israeli decision, warning that the current trajectory on the ground is 'eroding the prospect for the two-State solution.' He reiterated that all Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, 'have no legal validity and constitute a flagrant violation of international law.'

The EU also condemned the measures as 'counterproductive and incompatible with international law,' stating they 'risk undermining ongoing international efforts aimed at stabilization and the advancement of peaceful efforts in the region.'

Turkey reiterated its unwavering support for the Palestinian people's efforts to establish an independent and sovereign state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
