Germany Boosts Deep Strike Capabilities with TAURUS NEO Production
Germany has formally initiated the production phase for its next-generation TAURUS NEO cruise missiles, signing a significant contract to establish a serial manufacturing line. This strategic move is part of a broader plan to procure up to 600 advanced missiles, with an estimated total value of approximately €2.1 billion. The procurement aims to substantially enhance the Bundeswehr's deep strike capabilities and reinforce Germany's contribution to European and NATO deterrence.
Next-Generation Missile Technology
The TAURUS NEO represents an evolution of the existing TAURUS KEPD 350 cruise missile, known for its precision and long-range capabilities. The upgraded variant is expected to feature:
- An extended range beyond 500 kilometers
- Improved protection against electronic interference
- Enhanced navigation systems
- A new homing warhead
The contract for preparing the production line was awarded to TAURUS Systems GmbH, a joint venture between MBDA Deutschland GmbH and Saab Dynamics AB. MBDA has indicated its intention to produce these missiles in significant quantities at a German facility.
Strategic Importance for European and NATO Defense
This procurement underscores Germany's commitment to rebuilding its long-range strike capacity, following years of limited munitions stockpiles. Thomas Gottschild, MBDA Group's Executive Director for Strategy, emphasized that 'With Taurus NEO, Germany is specifically building up its state-of-the-art deep strike capabilities, thereby providing a critical contribution to the deterrence capabilities of Europe and NATO.' The decision reflects a strategic shift from crisis management to establishing credible long-range deterrence, particularly in the context of ongoing security challenges in Europe.
Production Timeline and Funding
The development of new technologies for the TAURUS NEO began under a maintenance and modernization contract for existing TAURUS missiles, signed in December 2024. Parliamentary approval for the funding, which includes €415 million allocated through 2029 for serial production preparations, was secured in December 2025. While the overall procurement plan was formulated in late 2024, the first deliveries of the new TAURUS NEO systems are anticipated to commence in 2029.
This initiative aligns with a broader push by MBDA to expand missile production across Europe, with the company planning to invest €2.4 billion between 2025 and 2029 to support increased production rates. The modernization efforts are expected to ensure the operational readiness of the TAURUS missile system until at least 2045.

Rebuilding long-range strike capacity is a valid strategic goal for Germany, given past underinvestment. Still, relying solely on military solutions can be risky, and diplomatic avenues should always be prioritized alongside military readiness.

Just more war profiteering. We need diplomacy, not more weapons.

It's good to see Germany investing in modern defense technology, especially for NATO's collective security. However, the anticipated delivery date of 2029 means these won't address immediate threats, suggesting a long-term strategy rather than urgent response.
