Prime Minister Narendra Modi undertook a significant one-day visit to the states of
Karnataka and
Goa on
Friday, November 28, 2025, participating in key religious and cultural events. The visit included a mass recitation of the Bhagavad Gita in Udupi, Karnataka, and the unveiling of a monumental 77-foot bronze statue of Prabhu Shri Ram in Canacona, Goa.
Udupi: A Spiritual Gathering at Sri Krishna Matha
PM Modi commenced his day in
Udupi, Karnataka, where he participated in the '
Laksha Kantha Gita Parayana' (mass recitation of the Bhagavad Gita) at the historic
Sri Krishna Matha.
Upon his arrival, the Prime Minister was greeted by a roadshow, with enthusiastic crowds lining the streets. At the Sri Krishna Matha, he joined approximately
one lakh (100,000) participants, including students, monks, scholars, and devotees, in reciting verses from the
15th chapter (Purushottama Yoga) and the final 10 shlokas of the Bhagavad Gita.
During his visit to Udupi, PM Modi also performed several inaugurations:
- He inaugurated the Suvarna Teertha Mantapa (Golden Tirtha Mandap), located in front of the Krishna sanctum.
- He dedicated the Kanaka Kavacha (golden cover) for the sacred Kanakana Kindi, a revered window through which Saint Kanakadasa is believed to have had a divine vision of Lord Krishna.
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi highlighted the spiritual significance of the event, stating that the collective recitation demonstrated 'the living divinity of India's millennia-old spiritual heritage' and showcased the power of unity and spirituality. He also recalled Udupi's historical contributions to governance models and its connection to the Ram Janmabhoomi movement.
Goa: Unveiling the World's Tallest Lord Ram Statue
Later in the afternoon, Prime Minister Modi traveled to
Canacona, South Goa, to participate in the '
Sardha Panchashatamanotsava,' the
550th-year celebrations of the
Shree Samsthan Gokarn Partagali Jeevottam Math.
The highlight of his visit to Goa was the unveiling of a majestic
77-foot bronze statue of Prabhu Shri Ram. This imposing statue, crafted by renowned sculptor
Ram Sutar, who also designed the 'Statue of Unity,' is being hailed as the world's tallest Lord Ram statue.
In addition to the statue unveiling, PM Modi also:
- Inaugurated the newly developed Ramayana Theme Park Garden on the Math's premises.
- Released a special postal stamp and a commemorative coin to mark the occasion.
The Shree Samsthan Gokarn Partagali Jeevottam Math is recognized as the first
Gowd Saraswat Brahmin Vaishnava Math, adhering to the
Dvaita tradition established by Jagadguru Madhvacharya. The 550th-year celebrations at the Math are scheduled to run from
November 27 to December 7, 2025, with the statue expected to become a significant landmark for pilgrimage and tourism.
Reinforcing Cultural Heritage
Prime Minister Modi's visit underscored the government's focus on promoting India's rich cultural and spiritual heritage. The events in both Karnataka and Goa served to highlight ancient traditions and their contemporary relevance, drawing participation from a wide spectrum of society and reinforcing a sense of national unity and cultural pride.

The potential for increased tourism and pilgrimage is certainly a positive economic aspect for these regions. However, adequate infrastructure and environmental safeguards must be put in place to manage the influx.

Waste of taxpayer money on statues and ceremonies. Priorities are wrong.

While the celebration of cultural heritage is important, one has to wonder if such grand expenditures are justified when so many still struggle with basic needs. It's a delicate balance.
