PGR Files Denouncement Against Bolsonaro's Son and Commentator
The Prosecutor-General's Office (PGR) in Brazil formally denounced federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro and commentator Paulo Figueiredo to the Supreme Federal Court (STF) on Monday, September 22, 2025. The denouncement accuses them of coercion in a judicial process, specifically alleging attempts to interfere with legal proceedings related to the attempted coup involving former President Jair Bolsonaro.
According to Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet, the actions of Bolsonaro and Figueiredo were aimed at benefiting Jair Bolsonaro and Paulo Figueiredo themselves, particularly to prevent the former president's conviction.
Allegations of Orchestrated Foreign Sanctions
The PGR's denouncement details that Eduardo Bolsonaro and Paulo Figueiredo allegedly orchestrated a campaign from the United States to exert pressure on Brazilian authorities. This included lobbying the Donald Trump administration for support and claiming credit for the imposition of 50% tariffs on Brazilian goods. The denouncement also cites the suspension of visas for eight STF ministers, including Justice Alexandre de Moraes and Justice Luís Roberto Barroso, in July 2025, which Eduardo Bolsonaro publicly acknowledged. Furthermore, the application of the Magnitsky Act against Justice Alexandre de Moraes and his wife was highlighted as part of these coercive efforts.
The PGR stated that the accused 'repeatedly sought to subordinate the interests of Brazil and the entire society to his own personal and family agenda,' exposing the country to threats of sanctions from foreign governments.
Reactions and Potential Consequences
In response to the charges, Eduardo Bolsonaro dismissed them as 'bogus' and 'absurd' via social media, asserting that the announcement underscored his 'ongoing political persecution.' He also referred to the PGR staff as 'Moraes's lackeys.' The STF and Justice Alexandre de Moraes condemned the US sanctions, describing them as 'illegal and regrettable' and an interference in Brazil's sovereignty.
If the STF accepts the denouncement, Eduardo Bolsonaro and Paulo Figueiredo could become defendants in a criminal action, potentially facing prison sentences of one to four years. Additionally, Eduardo Bolsonaro may face a process in the Chamber of Deputies' Ethics Council for breach of parliamentary decorum, based on his activities in the United States.

If true, the actions described are indeed problematic for Brazil's international standing and internal stability. Still, the defense's claim of 'Moraes's lackeys' highlights a deep-seated distrust in institutions that needs addressing for overall legitimacy.

This is a witch hunt against conservatives. Brazil is becoming a banana republic where dissent is criminalized.

Another attack from Moraes's court. This is absurd and clearly politically motivated.

Coercion and foreign lobbying against our own country should be severely punished. Justice is being served.

Finally, some accountability! No one is above the law, especially when threatening national sovereignty.
