El Salvador recently made a significant drug seizure, retrieving 1.4 tons of cocaine that was discovered floating in the Pacific Ocean. President Nayib Bukele announced the find on Tuesday, describing it as a critical measure against international drug trafficking. The packages were located about 1,000 miles southwest of El Cordoncillo, near the mouth of the Jaltepeque estuary, an area recognized for its role in drug transport.
This recent confiscation comes amid a broader crackdown on drug trafficking in Latin America, with U.S. support. President Bukele noted that the floating shipment carries an estimated value of $35 million, adding that the country had seized a total of 37.2 tons of cocaine valued at $932.4 million between 2024 and 2025.
The U.S. embassy in El Salvador commended this operation, stating that it illustrates the deepening collaboration between nations confronting shared threats posed by criminal networks. As the U.S. identifies that a substantial portion of the cocaine reaching its shores passes through Central America, strategies against various cartels have intensified. In particular, former President Trump took firm measures, directing military assets towards Venezuela and conducting missile strikes against suspected drug boats associated with organized crime groups.
As part of the ongoing strategy to combat drug trafficking, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth emphasized the U.S. would maintain its presence in the Caribbean and actively target individuals engaged in drug trafficking operations. Additionally, plans are underway to deploy F-35 fighter jets to the region to provide further support in the initiative against narcotics-related activities.

So many resources spent on punitive measures while social programs that prevent drug abuse get underfunded.

Bukele is just trying to distract us from the growing authoritarianism in his government. Don't fall for it!

Another publicity stunt by Bukele, just smoke and mirrors. Real change requires more than just drug busts!

drug demand in the U.S. How about tackling that instead?

Why are we celebrating the seizure of cocaine when it highlights the failures of our system to address drug addiction?

I’m tired of seeing law enforcement celebrated while marginalized communities continue to suffer.
