Nationwide Safety Initiative
The Bulgarian Ministry of Interior and the General Directorate of National Police have officially launched the annual 'Winter' traffic safety campaign. This nationwide initiative, which runs throughout the month of November, aims to enhance road safety as weather conditions deteriorate and daylight hours decrease across the country.
Focus on Vehicle Technical Condition
During the campaign, traffic police officers are conducting intensive checks on vehicles to ensure compliance with safety regulations. The primary focus of these inspections includes:
- Tire condition: Ensuring tires are suitable for winter driving with adequate tread depth.
- Lighting systems: Verifying that all headlights, taillights, and signal lights are fully functional.
- Wiper and fluid systems: Checking for proper operation of windshield wipers and the use of winter-appropriate washer fluid.
- General technical readiness: Assessing the overall roadworthiness of vehicles to prevent breakdowns and accidents.
Phased Enforcement Strategy
The campaign is structured into three distinct phases to address different aspects of road safety. The first phase, currently underway, focuses on the technical condition of vehicles and the preparation of drivers for winter conditions. Subsequent phases will shift focus toward pedestrian safety and the behavior of drivers in relation to vulnerable road users, as well as the enforcement of traffic rules during the peak of the winter season.
Official Guidance for Drivers
Authorities have urged all motorists to prioritize vehicle maintenance before traveling. A spokesperson for the traffic police emphasized the importance of preparation, stating, 'The goal of this campaign is not merely to issue fines, but to prevent incidents by ensuring every vehicle on the road is prepared for the challenges of winter weather.' Drivers found with significant technical defects may be subject to fines or temporary suspension of their vehicle's registration until the issues are rectified.
