In Narowal, Pakistan, on Wednesday, authorities took action to address severe flooding. They detonated an embankment adjacent to a swollen dam, a response to the escalating water levels. The flooding had already submerged a significant religious site for Sikhs, considered one of the most sacred in the world.
The flooding crisis was fueled by intense rainfall across the border in India. This rainfall caused three major rivers in eastern Pakistan to swell to unprecedented levels. The province of Punjab was placed under flood alerts as a result. The Pakistani army was mobilized to assist in the evacuation of residents and their animals from areas near the Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej rivers.
The disaster management agency reported that approximately 210,000 individuals had been relocated to safer locations. At the Qadirabad dam, situated on the Chenab River, officials made the decision to carry out a controlled explosion of an embankment.
According to Mazhar Hussain, a spokesperson for Punjab’s disaster management agency, the controlled breach was implemented to protect the dam's structural integrity. The explosion was intended to reduce the water flow by creating an outlet.

With so many lives at stake, why isn't the government taking more preventative measures?

Controlled measures can save lives, even if they seem drastic. Well done to the disaster management teams!

If the embankment had to be detonated, it indicates a total failure of flood management strategy.

The safety of the people must always come first in a crisis like this. Great job by the authorities!

This is a prime example of negligence! How can officials justify damaging sacred sites for temporary relief?
