UK households are being advised to use tea tree oil to deter spiders from entering their homes. Spider season typically begins in early September, but due to the warm and dry summer, sightings have started earlier than usual. Male spiders begin their search for mates indoors in late summer, and this year's increased activity is unwelcome news for those who fear spiders.
There are over 650 spider species in the UK, with the house spider being the most common. These eight-legged creatures enter homes through any available openings, such as open doors and windows, as well as inside clothing brought in from outside.
The simplest way to prevent spiders from entering is to keep doors and windows closed and seal any cracks. For an added layer of protection, experts suggest applying tea tree oil around potential entry points. Spiders have a sensitive sense of smell and dislike strong scents like tea tree oil, making it an effective natural repellent. Spraying or rubbing the oil around windows, doors, and corners can help keep spiders away.
To create the solution, mix approximately 10 to 15 drops of tea tree oil with one cup of water in a spray bottle. Apply the solution generously to areas like windowsills, door frames, and room corners. You can also spray it along furniture edges or where cobwebs are present. Adding other strong-smelling essential oils like peppermint, lavender, lemon, or eucalyptus, or even a tablespoon of white vinegar, can enhance the solution's effectiveness, as spiders also dislike these scents.

What about the chemicals in tea tree oil? Do we really want to be spraying that indoors?
