On Thursday, Shinjiro Koizumi, Japan's Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister and member of the Liberal Democratic Party, traveled to Yumeshima in Osaka to evaluate the site of the upcoming 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo. He was joined by Hirofumi Yoshimura, the Governor of Osaka and leader of the Japan Innovation Party, showcasing their strong political relationship, which some view as a catalyst for potential coalition opportunities between their parties.
The visit included a comprehensive two-hour tour of various pavilions, including those representing Osaka Prefecture and the United States. Koizumi and Yoshimura are known for aligning on certain policy initiatives, such as their support for ride-sharing services that enable private car owners to offer transportation for a fee.
After completing the inspection, both Koizumi and Yoshimura addressed the media together, with Koizumi commending Yoshimura's leadership amid earlier criticisms of the Expo's planning and attendance. He characterized Yoshimura as a politician committed to reform, while Yoshimura reciprocated the praise by recognizing Koizumi's reformist approach within the LDP. Yoshihide Suga, vice president of the LDP and Koizumi's mentor, is also well-connected with the Japan Innovation Party. A senior LDP figure mentioned that Koizumi's potential ascension to party presidency could lead to cooperative efforts with the JIP.
Despite the apparent camaraderie, Yoshimura noted that at present, he is not actively pursuing a coalition, emphasizing the need for the LDP to establish its leadership structure first. He expressed a desire to collaborate with like-minded individuals to progress their political objectives.

Potential coalition opportunities"? Sounds like more political maneuvering to me. Focus on solving real problems!

The tour of the pavilions shows that efforts are being made

It makes sense to wait until the LDP leadership is established before considering any coalition.

The fact that Yoshimura isn’t actively seeking coalition now makes the situation more realistic.

It’s good that the leaders are touring the site of the Expo- that means they care.
