The 12th World Games, currently underway in Chengdu, Sichuan province, is shaping up to be a remarkable event. International World Games Association President Jose Perurena expressed his belief that this edition will be among the best in the history of the games. He made this statement at a press conference, highlighting the positive atmosphere and the exceptional work of the Chinese hosts.
Perurena specifically praised the electric atmosphere within the competition venues, noting that it has set a new standard for the World Games. He expressed gratitude for the hosts' efforts, stating that their work has met and exceeded expectations. The games have also seen high attendance rates, which, combined with the outstanding performances of the athletes, has created a captivating spectacle.
The world-class venues, efficient transportation, and the quality of catering and operations within the games village have also received high praise. Perurena mentioned that he had heard positive feedback from numerous athletes regarding these aspects.
The 11-day multisport event, which continues through Sunday, has drawn a record number of athletes. A total of 3,942 athletes from 116 countries and regions are participating in 256 events across 60 disciplines within 34 sports.
As of Monday afternoon, a significant number of medals had been awarded. The Chinese sports delegation currently leads the medal tally. Furthermore, several records have been broken since the games began, including records in para-events.
In a move to further solidify the legacy of The World Games, the IWGA and Chengdu Sport University signed a memorandum of understanding. This partnership will focus on sports research, athlete development, sports medicine, event organization, and cultural exchanges. Following the signing ceremony, the IWGA Sports Research and Promotion Center was unveiled, with the IWGA President and CEO appointed as honorary professors of the university.
