Wangxiangu Valley in Shangrao, Jiangxi province, has transformed into a popular tourist destination. This transformation has revitalized a former mining site, creating jobs and boosting the local economy through innovative redevelopment.
The area's evolution wasn't immediate. Since 1998, Wangxian township in Shangrao was a hub for granite plate production, housing around 200 production lines and providing over 5,000 jobs. However, this industrial activity led to environmental damage due to unregulated practices and outdated methods. In 2007, the local government closed all stone processing factories, causing many young people to seek employment elsewhere, leaving behind children and the elderly.
In 2010, Jiuniu Cultural and Tourism Co. introduced a rafting project to attract visitors. However, inconsistent water levels led to financial losses. According to Xiong Hui, the company's vice-president, the need for innovation and creativity in cultural tourism became apparent. The goal shifted to restoring the village's beauty, preserving its traditions, and rebuilding its prosperity.
The mining site was gradually developed into Wangxian Valley, a cultural resort town that integrates natural and cultural landscapes, folk experiences, and performances. In 2024, the scenic spot welcomed 3.1 million tourists, including over 150,000 international visitors.
The popularity of Wangxian Valley has spurred the growth of a cultural tourism industry cluster in the surrounding areas. Local residents have opened approximately 1,100 homestays and 386 inns, benefiting around 100,000 residents.
Hu Mei, an external investor, opened a tea house in Wangxian township in 2020. Recognizing the increasing tourism, she expanded her business by opening a hotel near the scenic spot. Her hotel offers complimentary services such as transfers to scenic areas, tea-tasting sessions, and opportunities to experience traditional ethnic costumes. The hotel provides a space for tourists to relax and enjoy themselves. The hotel operates in a building rented from local villages, generating significant annual revenue for the villages. Hu's hotel has seen high occupancy rates.
The area's development has also encouraged locals to return and start businesses. Wu Wenqiang, who previously worked as a graphic designer, returned to Wangxian in 2022. After successfully running a guesthouse, he opened a local cuisine restaurant. He views the restaurant as a way to connect tourism resources and introduce local cuisine to a wider audience. In May, the restaurant achieved significant operational revenue.

What kind of oversight is there with these rapid developments? It seems risky for both the environment and local communities.

Adding thousands of tourists puts a strain on local infrastructure. Is there a plan to manage this effectively?
