Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney revealed on Wednesday that Canada will recognize the State of Palestine in September. This decision is scheduled to coincide with the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The Prime Minister's Office released a statement explaining the rationale behind this move. The statement cited the diminishing prospects for a two-state solution as the primary reason for Canada's recognition.
The statement also outlined specific conditions tied to this recognition. It emphasized the importance of reforms within the Palestinian Authority. These reforms include commitments from Palestinian Authority President Abbas to overhaul governance, to hold general elections in 2026 excluding Hamas, and to demilitarize the Palestinian state.
Furthermore, the statement reiterated Canada's position on Hamas. It demanded the immediate release of all hostages taken during the October 7 terrorist attack. The statement also insisted on Hamas' disarmament and its exclusion from any future governance of Palestine.

This is a bold and necessary step. Recognizing Palestine is crucial to keeping the two-state solution alive.
