China and Panama Discuss Cooperation on the Panama Canal

On Tuesday, the Chinese Embassy in Panama released a statement detailing Ambassador Xu Xueyuan's recent meeting with Ricaurte Vásquez Morales, the administrator of the Panama Canal Authority, and Ilya Espino de Marotta, the deputy administrator. The meeting focused on the ongoing relationship between China and Panama concerning the vital waterway.

Ambassador Xu highlighted the successful management of the Panama Canal since Panama regained control, including the completion of its expansion. He acknowledged the canal's significant contribution to global shipping and trade. The ambassador also reiterated China's commitment to respecting the canal's permanent neutrality.

Furthermore, Xu emphasized China's unwavering support for Panama's sovereignty over the canal. He expressed China's willingness to collaborate with Panama to ensure the canal's continued operation and accessibility.

Vásquez acknowledged the Panama Canal's importance as a symbol of Panamanian history and national pride. He noted the crucial role played by Chinese expatriates and their descendants in the canal's construction. Recognizing China as the canal's second-largest user, the authority expressed its desire to strengthen exchanges and mutual learning with China in maritime affairs and shipping, ultimately benefiting both nations.

Why is the Chinese Embassy getting involved with our Panama Canal? This smells like a power grab.

Can we really believe that China will respect the canal's neutrality? Their track record speaks otherwise.

I’m not comfortable with the idea of China being so integrated into our national infrastructure.

This will only further complicate our relationships with other countries who have interests in the canal.

This meeting sounds more like a negotiation for control rather than a partnership.
