A recall has been issued for over a dozen jam products due to an undeclared ingredient that could be harmful to certain individuals. The Scottish brand Sarah Gray’s is recalling 14 products because they contain sulphites that were not listed on the product labels.
Sulphites are preservatives commonly used in the production of various food and beverage items. These compounds can cause allergy-like symptoms in sensitive individuals. These symptoms can include wheezing, chest tightness, and coughing. Furthermore, when sulphites interact with stomach acid, they can release sulphur dioxide, which may irritate and constrict the airways.
According to Allergy UK, it is estimated that less than 2% of the general population is allergic to sulphites. However, this percentage increases to between 5% and 13% among individuals with asthma.
The recall, initiated by Sarah Gray’s, a company based in Fife, involves 14 jam products that include Prosecco or champagne. These products were sold online and in various independent retail locations. The Food Standards Agency issued a notice stating that the products pose a potential health risk to those sensitive to sulphur dioxide or sulphites due to the undeclared presence of these compounds. Consumers who have purchased these products and have a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide or sulphites are advised not to consume them. Instead, they should return the products to the store where they were purchased for a full refund.

It’s better that products are recalled than risking people's health. Thank you, Sarah Gray’s!

This seems like an overreaction; hardly anyone is allergic to sulphites.

I applaud Sarah Gray’s for their transparency. They could’ve easily ignored this.

I hope more companies take note and ensure their labels are accurate!
