One year after the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024, the motives of the gunman remain unclear. The gunman was fatally shot by a Secret Service countersniper. Questions persist regarding how such an event can be prevented in the future.
Representative Mike Kelly, representing the Butler area, addressed a Republican Study Committee press conference. He presented a resolution condemning the two attempts on Trump’s life, as well as the recent killings and attempted killing of Minnesota lawmakers. He spoke emotionally about the death of a fireman who was attending the rally.
The motivation of the slain gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, remains unknown. A House task force investigated the assassination attempt, releasing its final report in December. Senator Ron Johnson has subpoenaed the FBI for information on the attempt on Trump’s life.
Kelly suggested that uncovering the gunman's motivation would be difficult. He noted that the federal agencies did not provide the necessary answers. He also mentioned a second assassination attempt in Florida, about which little information has been released. Kelly believes the solution lies in addressing the moral decline in America.
The task force faced challenges accessing information on the Butler attack. Local law enforcement in Butler was forthcoming, but federal agencies were less cooperative.
Political violence is a major concern, especially after the recent shootings of the lawmakers in Minnesota. Increased security measures have been called for by both parties.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is urging Congress to act to protect congressmen from attacks. Discussions are ongoing between House Democrats and Republicans to improve member safety and security.
Representative Mark Harris echoed Kelly's argument that money alone cannot solve the issue of political violence. He believes the problem stems from individuals who are on the edge. He argued that personal attacks have created an environment of political violence.
Harris views the Butler event as a positive moment, given Trump's narrow escape. He believes Trump emerged from the event with resolve and momentum.

The fact that they are doing a joint investigation is a great thing, we need all sides to know the truth.

They're using this to attack federal agencies again. Classic deflection from their own failings.

The Florida attempt is conveniently shrouded in secrecy. Makes you wonder what's really going on.

It's commendable that they're still investigating this. We need to find answers and prevent future events.
