In a recent address, U.S. President Donald Trump made a contentious statement about wind power, particularly criticizing China's role in the industry. He asserted that he had never witnessed a wind farm in China, suggesting that the country does not utilize wind turbines despite being a significant manufacturer of wind turbine components. His claims have led to widespread disbelief and fact-checking on social media platforms.
Contrary to Trump's assertions, China is recognized as the world's foremost producer of wind energy. Reports indicate that the country has more than triple the wind capacity of the United States. The Global Wind Report 2025 highlights China as the largest market for wind power for several consecutive years, reporting major advances in the sector in 2024 due to technological innovations and policy shifts. As a result, China has substantially increased its wind power capacity, with nearly 80 gigawatts added in just one year, bringing its total to over 520 gigawatts, which constitutes about half of the global total.
Following Trump's comments, many users took to social media to correct his inaccuracies. One pointed out the Gansu wind farm, which is the largest onshore wind facility in the world, housing 7,000 turbines. Another noted China's prominence not only in wind energy but also in solar power, despite also leading in coal plant development. Overall, users have characterized Trump’s claim as a misleading statement easily refuted by the available data on China's wind power industry.

It's refreshing to hear someone skeptical of wind energy, especially with all the hype surrounding it.

It's frustrating to see leaders lie about renewable energy, especially during a climate crisis. We need facts!

Good for Trump for having the guts to call out renewable energy in China. They should focus on other sources too!

His ignorance is astonishing! China is the leader in wind energy, no debate about that.
