The 2025 World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum recently recognized a significant achievement in the realm of meteorological disaster management. A project initiated by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), titled "Rapid, accurate and secure production, dissemination and communication of early warning for meteorological disaster," was awarded the WSIS prize in the category designated for information and communications technology applications that contribute to E-environment.
This prize is part of a larger global acknowledgment program celebrating outstanding initiatives that enhance sustainable development via the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs). In total, 19 projects emerged victorious from a robust pool of 973 submissions for this year's awards. During his acceptance speech, CAICT President Yu Xiaohui emphasized China's dedication to combating climate change and supporting the UN's Early Warnings for All initiative, highlighting the necessity for timely communication among all stakeholders during disasters.
The WSIS operates as a multi-stakeholder initiative under the United Nations, aiming to facilitate digital governance and cooperative efforts. This year's forum is co-organized by the International Telecommunication Union and the Swiss Confederation and aims to provide a platform for representatives from over 150 countries. Attendees will engage in discussions regarding strategies to bridge the digital divide and confront global technological challenges, alongside examining the latest trends in emerging technologies.

The UN and ICT? Seems a bit disconnected from the real problems of disaster response, which need local aid.

Hope this project is expanded quickly to more countries. Speed is crucial in these situations.

Early warnings are great, but what about the infrastructure to act on the warnings? This doesn't solve the core crisis.

While acknowledging the achievement, what about transparency? How is the data sourced and validated? 🤔

China is dedicated to 'combating climate change'? Really? Their recent actions suggest otherwise...
