On June 8, 2025, China Central Television (CCTV) News featured a report showcasing the L15 advanced trainer jet, a product of Chinese development.
Official media sources recently provided details on the FTC-2000G and the L15, two Chinese combat trainer aircraft designed for export. An aviation expert highlighted their strong competitiveness in the global market, citing their cost-effectiveness, dual-role capabilities for both training and combat, and China's comprehensive technological support.
The FTG-2000G, a light multipurpose fighter jet and export variant of the JL-9 trainer aircraft, incorporates a T-shaped wing configuration with strakes and flaps. This design enhances its performance at low altitudes and speeds, as reported by CCTV News. The FTC-2000G has undergone test flights with an upgraded radar, evaluating its capabilities and other fundamental performance aspects. The aircraft is equipped with a nose-mounted radar, DSI air intakes, a maximum takeoff weight of 11 tons, a top speed of Mach 1.2, and a maximum range of 2,400 kilometers. These features make it a suitable light combat-attack trainer aircraft, particularly for developing nations seeking to replace older fighter jets.
The L15, another prominent Chinese trainer aircraft, is also available internationally. The L-15 exhibits characteristics of third-generation (or fourth-generation) fighters, including a large strake aerodynamic design, a blended wing-body structure, an advanced digital fly-by-wire flight control system, and an integrated avionics system. CCTV News noted that the aircraft's agile handling and high-angle-of-attack maneuverability meet the requirements for basic combat flight training and tactical conversion training for third-generation fighter pilots.
An enhanced export version of the L15 can carry various armaments, including air-to-surface bombs, air-to-air missiles, external fuel tanks, and a gun pod. Its flight performance, maneuverability, and handling characteristics make it well-suited for low-to-medium altitude tactical operations, providing effective close air support. The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force utilizes a domestic version of the L15, designated as the JL-10.
Wang Ya'nan, chief editor of Aerospace Knowledge magazine, stated that both the FTC-2000G and the L15 are multirole aircraft capable of both training and combat missions. He noted that the FTC-2000G is a cost-effective aircraft derived from the J-7 fighter jet, while the L15 caters to a higher-end market. A key advantage for both aircraft is China's technological independence, allowing for comprehensive solutions, including maintenance, manufacturing facilities, and technology transfer, in addition to price advantages.

Blended wing-body structure? Strakes and flaps? Those phrases sound very "last-generation

The L15's capabilities are promising, particularly its agile handling and maneuverability. Great for a young Airforce!!

The FTC-2000G and L15 seem perfect for smaller air forces that don't need the most expensive options.

Cost-effective? Probably comes at the expense of quality. I'd rather trust a proven Western design than a cut-rate Chinese fighter.

Looks like a solid platform for pilot training. Essential for any air force to develop its capabilities.

Technological independence is a huge benefit. No reliance on unreliable or unfriendly foreign suppliers.
