Following a crash during the third stage of the Tour de France, Belgian cyclist Jasper Philipsen underwent surgery. The incident occurred when he was involved in a collision with Frenchman Bryan Coquard, resulting in a fall that caused a broken collarbone.
The crash forced Philipsen to withdraw from the race. He was subsequently transported to a hospital for medical attention.
His team, Alpecin-Deceuninck, announced on Tuesday that the surgery to repair his collarbone and shoulder joint was successful. The team expressed their support for Philipsen as he begins his recovery process.
Philipsen has a strong track record in the Tour de France, having secured ten stage victories throughout his career. He was also considered a potential contender for the green jersey, awarded to the best sprinter.

It’s time we focus on the toll of these sports on athletes’ health, not just their triumphs.

This incident is proof that the Tour is becoming too reckless; do we need more safety regulations?

You can’t always rely on luck in cycling—Philipsen should learn that.
