Sanjog Gupta, an Indian national, has been appointed as the new chief executive officer of the International Cricket Council (ICC). He replaces Geoff Allardice of Australia, who previously held the position. The announcement was made on Monday.
Prior to his appointment, Gupta served as the CEO of JioStar Sports. He assumed this role following the merger of Indian media assets between Reliance Industries and Walt Disney, a deal valued at $8.5 billion, which occurred in November of the previous year.
Gupta's predecessor, Allardice, had been appointed CEO in November 2021. This followed an eight-month interim period after the suspension of Manu Sawhney. Allardice stepped down from the role earlier this year.
In a statement released on Monday, Gupta expressed his enthusiasm for the future of the sport. He highlighted the growth of major events, expanding commercial opportunities, and the increasing popularity of women's cricket. He also noted the potential impact of cricket's inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and the rapid advancements in technology.
ICC chair Jay Shah emphasized the value of Gupta's experience in sports broadcasting and digital strategy. Shah believes Gupta's understanding of the global sports and media landscape, combined with his interest in the cricket fan's perspective and technology, will be crucial in expanding the game. The ICC aims to broaden cricket's reach, including its inclusion in the Olympics, and strengthen its presence in established markets.
