The mayor of Hiroshima has extended an invitation to President Donald Trump to visit the city. This invitation follows Trump's remarks in which he drew a comparison between the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima and his own decision to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Trump made the comparison while attending the NATO summit in the Netherlands. He stated that the American strikes on Iran were essentially the same as the nuclear attack on Japan, which ended the Second World War. These comments sparked significant criticism in Japan.
The mayor of Hiroshima, Kazumi Matsui, has long advocated for nuclear disarmament. He expressed concern that Trump did not fully grasp the reality of the atomic bombings and their devastating impact on innocent civilians. Matsui hopes that a visit to Hiroshima would allow Trump to understand the situation better and inform his future statements.
The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 resulted in the deaths of approximately 140,000 people in Hiroshima and 74,000 in Nagasaki, including the immediate impact and the long-term effects of radiation.
In a related development, Tulsi Gabbard, the director of national intelligence, recently visited Hiroshima and issued a warning against the use of nuclear weapons. She described the experience as deeply moving and unforgettable. Gabbard faced criticism from Trump after she commented on Iran's nuclear capabilities.
The ongoing global concerns about nuclear weapons are heightened by current conflicts and the modernization of nuclear arsenals by various countries. The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to a Japanese anti-nuclear weapon group last year, recognizing their efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons.
