A significant number of Labour MPs are urging Keir Starmer to permit a large influx of Palestinian refugees into the UK, a move that has raised concerns about national security. The Prime Minister, already facing challenges from backbench dissent, is being pressured to implement a visa program similar to the one established for Ukrainians, specifically for Gazans with family ties in Britain.
A total of 67 parliamentarians have formally requested that the Prime Minister and the Home Secretary facilitate the reunification of Palestinian families with their relatives in the UK until it is safe for them to return to their homes. The letter emphasized the belief that the UK should extend the same level of support to Palestinian families as it did to those fleeing persecution in Ukraine and Hong Kong. The letter was supported by a substantial number of Labour MPs and Lords, including several prominent figures.
The proposal also gained support from suspended Labour MPs, as well as members of the Green Party, the Liberal Democrats, and some Northern Ireland MPs. However, a similar proposal was previously met with criticism. A former British military chief expressed concerns that such a scheme would be impractical and pose a significant threat to the UK's domestic security.
The Conservative Party has also voiced opposition to the proposal. The shadow Home Secretary argued that neighboring Arab countries are unwilling to accept refugees from Gaza, and questioned why the UK should do so. Concerns were also raised about the potential for Hamas supporters and members to enter the UK under such a scheme. The UK is already experiencing high levels of immigration and asylum claims, and the Conservatives argue that the country lacks the capacity to accommodate more people.
A former senior military intelligence officer stated that it would be impossible to properly vet individuals participating in the scheme to determine if they are Hamas operatives or radical extremists. He highlighted the difficulty in distinguishing between Hamas members and the general population, and warned that allowing in individuals whose identities cannot be verified poses an unacceptable risk to the UK. The officer also noted that the scheme would be unworkable due to the challenges of people leaving Gaza.

This initiative shows the UK's commitment to human rights and compassion. We should welcome Palestinian refugees!

If we can help those fleeing Hong Kong, we should extend the same kindness to our Palestinian brothers and sisters.

Compassion should be at the heart of our political decisions. It’s crucial we stand up for vulnerable populations.

A second wave of refugee crises could stretch our already limited resources. Let’s focus on what we can realistically handle.

Letting in more refugees is just asking for trouble. We shouldn’t repeat the mistakes of the past!
