Chinese medical experts are expressing concern over the significant rise in diabetes cases over the past two decades, urging the public to adopt healthier lifestyles. A recent study revealed that as of 2023, 233 million people in China were diagnosed with diabetes, representing a 163 percent increase since 2005.
The study, published in the journal Military Medical Research, was led by Zhou Maigeng, deputy director of the National Center for Chronic and Noncommunicable Disease Control and Prevention. The incidence rate of diabetes has risen nearly 50 percent since 2005, climbing from 7.53 percent to 13.7 percent in 2023. If this trend continues, the national incidence rate could reach 29.1 percent by 2050.
Experts attribute the rising prevalence of diabetes to unhealthy diets, lack of physical activity, and reduced exposure to sunlight. Increased consumption of high-fat, high-calorie, and high-carbohydrate foods, combined with less outdoor activity, has contributed to a surge in overweight and obese individuals, which are key risk factors for diabetes. The rise in diabetes has paralleled a rapid increase in obesity among adults.
China has launched a campaign to promote weight management and healthy lifestyles. The aging population is also a contributing factor, as elderly individuals are more prone to developing diabetes due to metabolic changes. Diabetes poses serious health risks, affecting multiple organs and the immune system, potentially leading to complications.
The study suggests that with effective measures, the incidence rate of diabetes could be reduced. Experts recommend adopting sustainable health habits, such as eating more whole grains, following a high-protein diet, and reducing sugary drink consumption. Adequate sleep, stress management, and regular health checkups are also crucial.
There are positive signs, including increased exercise among young people and advancements in medicine and technology. New synthetic insulin versions allow for extended dosing intervals, and insulin pumps offer greater flexibility and convenience in managing the condition.
