Nick Kyrgios's tennis career has taken another setback as he withdrew from the US Open men's singles due to injury. This marks the third consecutive year he has missed the New York grand slam. He also missed the season's final three majors after an early exit at the Australian Open in January.
Kyrgios, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist, reached the quarterfinals at the US Open that year. However, he has since struggled with a series of injuries, including foot, knee, and wrist problems. Despite attempts to return to his best form, he has only managed to win one singles match in his comeback campaign.
He did not play at all last year and had only one match in 2023, resulting in him missing 11 of the last 12 grand slams. Kyrgios has not played a singles match since being defeated in Miami five months ago, with his wrist injury still causing issues. He also reported knee problems in July.
In a doubles match with Gael Monfils in Washington in July, Kyrgios sought to revive his career, initially in the mixed doubles competition with Naomi Osaka at Flushing Meadows. However, after withdrawing from that, organizers announced his absence from the men's singles, which began on Sunday.
Alex de Minaur will face fellow Australian Chris O'Connell in the US Open. Ajla Tomljanovic will play against Coco Gauff on Arthur Ashe Stadium. De Minaur has only played against fellow Australians twice in 88 grand slam matches.
De Minaur's potential path includes facing Hugo Gaston in the second round, Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third round, and Karen Khachanov in the last 16. A quarterfinal against Alexander Zverev and a potential semifinal against Jannik Sinner could also be on the cards.
Other Australian players in the men's draw include Alexei Popyrin, Adam Walton, and Rinky Hijikata. Alcaraz will face Reilly Opelka, and Djokovic will play Learner Tien.
Tomljanovic is set to play Gauff. Kim Birrell will face Amanda Anisimova. Daria Kasatkina will compete, and Caroline Garcia and Naomi Osaka could be potential opponents.
Aryna Sabalenka will begin against Rebeka Masarova, and Iga Swiatek will face Emiliana Arango. Venus Williams will compete against Karolina Muchova.
