President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he will decide within the next two weeks whether the U.S. will intervene in Israel's conflict with Iran. This decision comes amidst ongoing disagreements among conservatives regarding the issue.
The president, who had previously approved attack plans but hesitated to give the final authorization, is consulting with a select group of trusted advisors. He is also seeking input from world leaders and allies, including prominent Republican senators known for their hawkish views.
Outside of Trump's inner circle, figures like Tucker Carlson, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Steve Bannon, and Candace Owens have voiced opposition to U.S. involvement in another prolonged Middle Eastern conflict. Conversely, other Trump supporters in Congress and the media have advocated for intervention.
According to reports, Trump is consulting with several key individuals. Vice President Vance has previously expressed non-interventionist views on foreign conflicts, favoring a diplomatic solution with Iran. The White House Chief of Staff, known for her restraining influence, is also involved. A senior advisor, known for his hardline stance on immigration, is also reportedly providing input. The Secretary of State, who has a broad portfolio, is also involved.
Other key figures include Trump's Middle East envoy, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the head of U.S. Central Command, and the CIA Director. Notably absent from the list are the Defense Secretary and the Director of National Intelligence.
The Defense Department has refuted claims that the Defense Secretary has been sidelined, stating that he is in regular communication with the president and actively involved in providing leadership. Meanwhile, Trump is reported to have distanced himself from the Director of National Intelligence after she made statements critical of those escalating tensions between nuclear powers. When questioned about her statements, the president dismissed them.
One Trump supporter denied any advisory role in the discussions, dismissing reports as "fake news.
