Before the tragic events of Saturday morning, Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman was widely respected as a devoted public servant. Colleagues remembered her as an exceptional leader who dedicated her life to serving the public and was driven to improve the lives of others.
Hortman, who was 55 years old, began her career in the Minnesota State House in 2004. She later served as the speaker of the chamber from 2019 to 2025. Earlier this year, she led her caucus in a protest, challenging the actions of the opposing party. She eventually became minority leader and then "DFL Leader" following a special election.
In 2017, Hortman gained attention for criticizing male colleagues for their behavior during a legislative session. She defended her remarks, emphasizing the importance of speaking out against instances of being ignored.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, a close colleague, described Hortman as a "great leader" and a friend. He highlighted her dedication to making the state a better place, praising her grace, compassion, and tireless efforts in serving the people of Minnesota.
Also shot on Saturday was state Sen. John Hoffman, a fellow DFL member. He and his wife were wounded and receiving medical treatment. Hoffman, who was 60, was first elected in 2012 and chaired the state Senate Human Services Committee.
For over a decade, Hoffman focused his legislative efforts on disability services and the needs of children and their families. During his campaign, he expressed his frustration with previous representation and pledged to be a fair and balanced voice in the legislature, vowing to remain until the work was complete.
