Liverpool, the reigning Premier League champions, have reached an agreement to acquire German attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen. The transfer fee is set at 136.3 million euros, equivalent to approximately $156.75 million.
Reports indicate that Wirtz is anticipated to commit to a five-year contract with Liverpool. The total fee includes an initial payment of 117.5 million euros, supplemented by an additional 18.8 million euros in potential add-ons.
This substantial fee would establish Wirtz as Liverpool's most expensive signing in the club's history, surpassing the previous record held by Virgil van Dijk, the Dutch centre-back and team captain, who joined for 75 million pounds in 2017.
Wirtz, who had two years remaining on his contract with Leverkusen, also attracted interest from other prominent clubs, including Bayern Munich and Manchester City, managed by Pep Guardiola.
During the previous season, the German international showcased his talent, scoring 16 goals and providing 15 assists in 45 appearances for Leverkusen. The team finished second in the Bundesliga, behind Bayern Munich.
Wirtz's arrival would mark Liverpool's second acquisition during the current transfer window. The club previously secured the services of Dutch right-back Jeremie Frimpong, who was a teammate of Wirtz at Leverkusen.

I hope this doesn’t come back to bite us like other high-profile signings did in the past.
