China Slams Taiwan's Policies, Criticizes US Tariffs

Zhu Fenglian, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, addressed concerns regarding Lai Ching-te's proposals. She stated that the pursuit of "independence" by the Lai Ching-te authorities has led to the selling off of Taiwan's key industries. This has resulted in the US imposing high tariffs on the island, undermining the idea of a strong "US-Taiwan relationship" and transforming Taiwan into a disposable asset.

Zhu criticized the Lai authorities for prioritizing appeasement of the US through a "large procurement and investment plan," disregarding the interests of the Taiwanese people and their industrial development. She condemned this as a form of subservience and betrayal.

The spokesperson highlighted the US's imposition of tariffs, including a 145 percent tariff on the mainland and a 32 percent tariff on Taiwan, despite significant investments from companies like TSMC. This has sparked criticism of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities for their claims of a strong relationship with the US, which are now seen as misleading. Lai Ching-te's offer of zero tariffs to the US, without reciprocal measures, has been met with accusations of "surrendering to the US" and "hollowing out Taiwan."

Zhu emphasized that in response to the US's tariff actions and its role in a global trade war, the mainland has taken necessary countermeasures. These actions are intended to protect legitimate rights and interests, defend international trade rules, and uphold fairness and justice.

Zhu noted that the mainland's firm stance has garnered international support, with many countries opposing US actions. She also mentioned positive reactions from public opinion and netizens on the island, who have praised the mainland's resolve.

Concluding her remarks, Zhu expressed confidence in the future, stating that with peace across the Taiwan Straits and unity among compatriots, the Chinese nation can achieve economic strength and collectively overcome external challenges. This will pave the way for national rejuvenation, allowing people on both sides of the Straits to prosper.
