Fake Expo Websites Threaten User Security
the existence of multiple fake websites mimicking the official site of the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo, scheduled to begin on April 13th. Trend Micro Inc. discovered that domain names closely resembling the expo's official site have been acquired, enabling the creation of these deceptive websites.
The Expo organizer urges the public to remain vigilant, as these fake sites appear to be phishing attempts designed to steal users' private information under the guise of selling admission tickets. While the official expo website resides at the domain expo2025.or.jp, the cybersecurity firm confirmed the registration of three domains containing similar character strings, such as 2025expo and expo-2025, between late February and mid-March.
One of these fake sites masquerades as an English website for the expo under the name EXPO2025OSAKA. Upon clicking the "Get Tickets" tab, users are prompted to enter their names and telephone numbers. "This is not our official website," emphasized an official from the Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition, the organizer of the Expo. "We urge people to exercise caution when purchasing tickets online."
The association further revealed the discovery of a fake account impersonating the Expo's official account on X last summer. "Scam sites utilizing domains similar to those of official websites have been created during international events in the past," stated Katsuyuki Okamoto of Trend Micro. "People also need to be wary of social media posts posing as Expo-related, which could lead users to scam sites."
Therefore, it is crucial to exercise caution when interacting with online platforms claiming to represent the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo. Always verify the authenticity of the website by checking the domain name and comparing it to the official expo website, expo2025.or.jp. Additionally, be wary of unsolicited requests for personal information and avoid clicking on suspicious links or social media posts. By remaining vigilant and informed, you can protect yourself from falling victim to these phishing attempts.

It's sad that people would take advantage of such an exciting event. The Expo should be a joyous occasion, not a platform for scams.
