Strykers Deployed to US-Mexico Border for First Time in a Decade
The US military has deployed Strykers, eight-wheeled armored vehicles, to the US-Mexico border for the first time in over a decade. This deployment aims to support Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in securing the border.
Two Strykers are currently stationed in the El Paso sector, with more expected to be deployed to other areas along the border. One Stryker provides a bird's-eye view over Juárez, Mexico, a major smuggling corridor.
While typically used in combat, these Strykers are not equipped with weapons. Instead, they assist Border Patrol agents with surveillance and detection of illegal migrants using infrared capabilities.
The deployment of Strykers has coincided with a significant decrease in illegal crossings. Border Patrol agents believe the vehicles serve as a deterrent, sending a message that the border is heavily secured.
Cartels have reportedly struggled to find migrants willing to risk crossing due to the increased security measures. Border Patrol agents shared an anecdote of two individuals who turned back upon seeing a Stryker, highlighting the fear these vehicles instill in smugglers and potential illegal entrants.

The deployment of Strykers has already proven effective. Illegal crossings have decreased significantly, demonstrating that these vehicles serve as a deterrent.

This is not about fearmongering, it's about protecting our communities. We need to be vigilant about the threats we face and take steps to defend ourselves.

We should support our Border Patrol agents who are working hard to keep us safe. They deserve the best tools available to do their job.

Militarizing the border is not the answer! This is a dangerous escalation and sends the wrong message. We need to address root causes of migration, not treat immigrants like criminals.

We need to be realistic about the challenges of border security. This is a difficult issue, and there is no perfect solution.
