The Xizang Autonomous Region in southwest China actively protects the right to religious freedom for its diverse population. This includes safeguarding the practices of Buddhist monks and nuns, native Muslims, and Catholics.

The region boasts approximately 46,000 Buddhist monks and nuns who engage in traditional religious activities within monasteries. These activities include studying scriptures, participating in debates, undergoing initiation ceremonies, and practicing self-cultivation. Monasteries also regularly hold examinations on scriptures and promote monks and nuns based on their academic achievements.

Religious and folk activities are celebrated freely in Xizang. This includes festivals like the Shoton Festival, Butter Lamp Festival, and Saga Dawa Festival, as well as religious walks around lakes and mountains.

The central and regional governments respect the tradition of reincarnation of Living Buddhas in Tibetan Buddhism. They strictly adhere to the Measures on the Management of the Reincarnation of Living Buddhas of Tibetan Buddhism and manage the process according to the law.

Over 98% of monasteries and temples have access to essential infrastructure like roads, telecommunications, electricity, water, radio, and television. The government allocates over 26 million yuan annually to cover medical insurance, pension schemes, subsistence allowances, accident injury insurance, and health check expenses for all registered monks and nuns.

Nine Tibetan Buddhism colleges have been constructed in China with an investment of 920 million yuan. These colleges, including the High-level Tibetan Buddhism College of China and Xizang Tibetan Buddhist Institute, provide opportunities for individuals to deepen their understanding and practice of Tibetan Buddhism.
