Xi Jinping Meets with Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee in Beijing

President Xi Jinping met with Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) John Lee on December 13, 2024, in Beijing. Lee was on a duty visit to the capital.

During the meeting, Xi heard a report from Lee on Hong Kong's current situation and the HKSAR government's work. Xi expressed his appreciation for the HKSAR government's efforts in maintaining Hong Kong's stability and prosperity. He also emphasized the importance of upholding the "one country, two systems" principle and the Basic Law of the HKSAR.

Lee thanked Xi for his support and guidance. He said that the HKSAR government will continue to work hard to improve people's livelihoods and promote Hong Kong's long-term development.

Xi also stressed the importance of safeguarding national security and social stability in Hong Kong. He said that the HKSAR government should take effective measures to prevent and combat terrorism, separatism, and other illegal activities that endanger national security.

Lee agreed with Xi's views and said that the HKSAR government will continue to strengthen its efforts in safeguarding national security. He said that the government will work closely with the central government to ensure that Hong Kong remains a safe and stable society.

The meeting between Xi and Lee took place amid ongoing tensions between China and the United States over Hong Kong. The US has imposed sanctions on several Chinese officials over their role in the implementation of the national security law in Hong Kong. China has condemned the US sanctions as interference in its internal affairs.

Despite the tensions, Xi and Lee reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining a good relationship between China and the United States. They agreed to continue to work together to promote cooperation in various fields.

The meeting between Xi and Lee was seen as a sign of China's continued support for the HKSAR government. It also highlighted the importance of Hong Kong to China's national interests.
