China Condemns Foreign Interference in Hong Kong's Law Enforcement Actions

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning strongly condemned remarks made by certain countries regarding the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). These remarks misrepresented the actions taken by the HKSAR police against Kwok Fung-yee and 12 other individuals accused of engaging in anti-China activities.

Mao stated that China firmly opposes these countries' blatant attacks and vilification of the legitimate law enforcement activities of the Hong Kong police. She emphasized that the individuals in question have absconded overseas and have a history of engaging in activities aimed at destabilizing Hong Kong and undermining its development and social stability. Their actions, according to Mao, gravely undermine national security and Hong Kong's fundamental interests, impacting the "one country, two systems" principle.

The Hong Kong police, according to Mao, took law enforcement actions in accordance with the Law on Safeguarding National Security in Hong Kong and the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance. These actions, she stated, uphold the rule of law and meet the aspirations of the people. They are necessary to defend China's sovereignty and security and to uphold long-term stability in Hong Kong. Additionally, Mao emphasized that these actions are in line with international law and customary practice.

Mao reiterated that Hong Kong affairs are China's internal affairs and that there is no place for foreign interference. She urged relevant countries to respect China's sovereignty and Hong Kong's rule of law and to stop emboldening anti-China rioters. She warned that spreading pessimistic or slanderous rhetoric against Hong Kong will be futile, and any attempt to interfere in Hong Kong's affairs under the pretext of human rights and freedom is doomed to fail.

The Commissioner's Office of China's Foreign Ministry in HKSAR also expressed strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition against the statements made by officials and politicians from countries such as the US, the UK, Canada, and the EU. The office accused these countries of openly slandering the rule of law in the HKSAR, the practice of "one country, two systems," and interfering with the judiciary of the HKSAR. The spokesperson for the office emphasized that the core principle of the rule of law is that laws must be obeyed and violators must be punished. They stated that strict law enforcement and the eradication of evil are standard practices for countries to safeguard national security.
