A Lifeline for China's Aging Population - Personalized Care and Legal Support for the Elderly

A Lifeline for China's Elderly Population

Voluntary guardianship services are emerging as a crucial support system for China's rapidly aging population, particularly those without traditional guardians like spouses or children. These services, as defined in the 2020 Civil Code, allow adults to appoint a trusted individual or organization to act as their guardian in the event of incapacitation.

Jinshan Guardianship, established in 2020, is a pioneering non-profit organization dedicated to providing professional guardianship services for the elderly in Shanghai. Led by Fei Chao, Jinshan's team of five individuals offers a range of services, including medical decision-making, property management, and hospice care.

The organization's commitment to its clients is evident in their personalized approach. They regularly visit clients, accompany them on outings, and provide assistance with daily tasks like grocery shopping and cellphone repairs. This dedication is exemplified by their support for Ms. Hu, an elderly woman diagnosed with cancer. Jinshan accompanied her during her final days, providing over 1,175 hours of services, including 40 days in the hospital during the pandemic. After her passing, they arranged her funeral and spent nearly a year executing her will.

Jinshan's services extend beyond immediate needs. They also act as agents for clients in legal matters and ensure the execution of their wills. This comprehensive support provides peace of mind for both clients and their families.

As China's aging population continues to grow, the demand for guardianship services is expected to rise. Jinshan's model demonstrates the potential of these services to address the unique challenges faced by elderly individuals without traditional support systems. Their dedication to providing compassionate and personalized care offers a beacon of hope for a growing segment of China's population.

What happens if the appointed guardian becomes incapable or unwilling to continue? Is there a backup plan?

This sounds like a nice initiative, but what about the cost? Will average seniors be able to afford such services?
