Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has rejected the idea of holding negotiations with the United States over a nuclear deal. This comes after a letter from US President Donald Trump calling for such talks.
militarily, or you make a deal" preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. The letter was handed over to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi on Wednesday by Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the president of the United Arab Emirates.
While Araqchi and Gargash were meeting, Khamenei told a group of university students that Trump's offer for talks was "a deception aimed at misleading public opinion". He stated that there was no point in negotiating with the US as they would not honor any agreement.
Khamenei's rejection of talks comes amid heightened tensions between the two countries. The US has imposed crippling sanctions on Iran, while Iran has threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil shipping route.
The nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was signed in 2015 by Iran, the US, and five other world powers. The deal lifted sanctions on Iran in exchange for limits on its nuclear program. However, Trump withdrew the US from the deal in 2018 and reimposed sanctions.
Iran has since begun to violate the terms of the JCPOA, increasing its stockpile of enriched uranium and restarting its nuclear program. The US has responded by imposing additional sanctions and threatening military action.
The situation is highly volatile and the risk of conflict is real. Both sides have accused the other of escalating tensions. The international community is calling for both sides to de-escalate and return to diplomacy.
It remains to be seen whether Iran and the US will be able to find a way to resolve their differences peacefully. The stakes are high, as a conflict between the two countries could have devastating consequences for the region and the world.

Khamenei's refusal to negotiate is deeply concerning. He's playing with fire and risking a war that nobody wants.

It's frustrating to see both sides escalate the situation. We need leaders who are willing to compromise and find common ground.

The US is right to confront Iran's aggression. They can't be allowed to develop nuclear weapons.

Khamenei is right not to trust the US. They have a history of breaking agreements.
