On Wednesday, President Donald Trump expressed sympathy for the thousands of federal employees recently laid off, but also stated that many of these civil servants were not actively performing their duties. Trump, speaking during an Oval Office meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin, acknowledged some responsibility for the job losses, but stressed that his administration aims to retain only productive and competent personnel.
The president particularly pointed to significant staff reductions at the Education Department, praising Education Secretary Linda McMahon's approach to the cuts. Trump described McMahon as a skilled and experienced business professional, noting that she retained only the most qualified employees. He then criticized the prior management of federal operations, labeling the previous handling of numerous departmental issues and contractual arrangements as deeply flawed.
Trump emphasized that billions of dollars had been wasted through corruption and inefficient spending, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to significantly trimming federal staff and spending. Importantly, he outlined an ambition to decentralize education governance, shifting responsibility from the federal Department of Education directly to individual state authorities. He claimed this move would empower states, removing bureaucratic obstacles created by officials working from Washington.
The wave of job cuts has drawn considerable criticism over recent weeks, particularly directed at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk. Musk, who has been identified as the world's wealthiest individual and a key Trump campaign supporter, indicated that DOGE plans to extend its influence across nearly every federal agency and intends to greatly expand its size going forward.
The scope and pace of these layoffs have sparked widespread concerns, as they have affected employees at various federal departments across the country, notably in education and veterans' affairs. Specifically, the Education Department saw approximately half its workforce dismissed, while at the Department of Health and Human Services, voluntary buyouts were recently offered to all employees. The Department of Veterans Affairs also experienced cuts and contract cancellations.
Adding significantly to tensions were recent statements by White House adviser Alina Habba, who expressed no sympathy for federal workers affected by the layoffs. Habba publicly stated that these employees should resume serving American citizens as earnestly as the Trump administration itself. Furthermore, she ignited further controversy with comments regarding military veterans impacted by layoffs, suggesting some might not currently be suitable for employment.

This is a time for change, not for clinging to the status quo. Let's give the Trump administration a chance to make America great again.

Decentralizing education sounds good in theory, but giving states more control could lead to inconsistencies and inequalities across the country.

Veterans who have served our country deserve better than to be cast aside by this administration. They should be respected and supported, not treated like disposable assets.

These cuts are necessary to reduce the national debt and make government more accountable to taxpayers.
