Lanning's Record-Breaking Knock Not Enough for Capitals in WPL Clash Against Giants

Meg Lanning, the Australian cricket star, has achieved her highest score in the Women's Premier League (WPL) in India. However, her impressive performance was not enough to secure a victory for the Delhi Capitals against the Gujarat Giants.

Lanning, the captain of the Capitals, smashed a blistering 92 runs off just 57 deliveries, leading her team to a total of 177 runs in their 20 overs. Despite her efforts, the Giants, led by Australian all-rounder Ash Gardner, successfully chased down the target with three balls to spare, winning the match by five wickets.

Gardner contributed 22 runs to the Giants' total, while another Australian player, Beth Mooney, scored 44 runs off 35 deliveries as the opening batter. Lanning's knock, which included 15 fours and a six, propelled her to a total of 939 WPL career runs, surpassing her former Australian teammate Ellyse Perry in the race to become the league's most prolific batter.

The Capitals had already secured their place in the knockout stages as one of the top three teams. Lanning was aiming for a win that would have potentially sent her team straight to the tournament final.

In the final over of the Capitals' innings, Lanning needed 16 runs to reach a century. She appeared poised to achieve this feat after hitting two fours off Deandra Dottin. However, a slower ball from Dottin resulted in Lanning being bowled, ending her innings at 92 runs. This score remains the fifth-highest individual score in the WPL's brief history.

Australia's Jess Jonassen also made a notable contribution to the match, scoring 9 runs for the Capitals and claiming 2 wickets for 38 runs during the Giants' innings.
