The Chinese mainland has condemned Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities for banning academic exchanges with mainland universities. The move has been criticized as depriving students of their right to education and serving the DPP's separatist agenda for "Taiwan independence".
The ban on academic exchanges was announced by the island's education authority, citing concerns about "united front work" from the mainland. Universities in Taiwan are now prohibited from engaging in exchanges with mainland universities, including Jinan University in Guangdong province and Huaqiao University in Fujian province. High schools are also forbidden from encouraging or assisting students in pursuing studies at these institutions.
The Chinese mainland has responded by welcoming Taiwan students to participate in admissions examinations for the two universities, encouraging them to enroll in mainland universities. The mainland has also condemned the DPP for obstructing educational exchanges between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, emphasizing that their actions will face strong opposition from schools, students, and parents in Taiwan.
