A group of volunteers from across the Taiwan Strait has developed a unique initiative that uses artificial intelligence to restore and recreate blurry photographs of missing relatives. Founded by doctoral student Sheng Jianzhong from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, the AI Baby volunteer service team was motivated after observing a television report on missing children. Recognizing the difficulty of identifying individuals from unclear images, Sheng gathered like-minded students and developed an AI-based platform to enhance these photos, making reuniting families a tangible possibility.
After six months of intensive development, the team launched a platform employing techniques such as comprehensive restoration, facial enhancement, and super-resolution reconstruction. This technology transforms unrecognizable images into clear, detailed photos that can be widely shared online, printed on clothing, or displayed on posters, significantly improving the odds of a successful reunion. In many instances, the AI doesn’t simply restore images but actually re-creates them, producing results that are nearly indistinguishable from the originals and even facilitating the creation of animated short videos.
The initiative has already achieved remarkable success stories. One notable case involved the restoration of a grainy surveillance image that led to the identification and capture of a kidnapper, reuniting a father with his son after years of uncertainty. Additionally, the team’s work has extended to international efforts, with students from Taiwan collaborating to help reconnect families separated by geopolitical boundaries. In one such scenario, a young man from New Taipei City was able to trace his family roots in mainland China after the AI technology clarified decades-old photographs.
As the initiative continues to grow—from a small four-member group to a core team of more than 30 supported by a network of 300 volunteers—the technology is also evolving. New developments include algorithms capable of accounting for the aging process, thereby generating images that depict what missing relatives might look like at different stages of life. Beyond the technical achievements, the project carries a deep emotional and humanitarian impact, bridging cultural and geographical divides to help individuals rediscover their family histories.

This technology is impressive, but I worry it could be used for malicious purposes, such as creating deepfakes to spread misinformation or damage reputations." 😠
