China Defends Hong Kong's Actions Against Jimmy Lai in Trial

Jimmy Lai's Trial and China's Response

On Wednesday, Jimmy Lai, a prominent Hong Kong media mogul, testified in a trial related to his alleged involvement in the 2019 anti-government protests. In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian issued a statement condemning Lai and defending the Hong Kong government's actions.

Lin labeled Lai as a "major mastermind and participant" of the protests and an "agent and pawn" of anti-China forces. He emphasized that the Hong Kong government's actions in upholding national security are justified and legal, based on the Basic Law and the National Security Law for Hong Kong.

Lin also stressed that Hong Kong operates under the rule of law and that everyone, regardless of their political beliefs, must abide by the law. He condemned attempts to use "democracy" as a justification for unlawful activities and escape justice.

The spokesperson further stated that Hong Kong's judicial authorities operate independently and ensure fair and transparent court proceedings. He expressed the Central Government's unwavering support for the HKSAR in safeguarding national security and punishing acts that undermine it.

Lin concluded by denouncing interference from certain countries in China's internal affairs and their attempts to undermine Hong Kong's rule of law using this case.
