A Catalyst for Change and a Potential Global Tourism Hub

A Catalyst for Change and a Potential Global Tourism Hub

The Harbin Asian Winter Games have been the best Winter Asiad yet, according to Timothy Fok Tsun-ting, first vice-president of the Olympic Council of Asia. In an exclusive interview with China Daily, Fok praised the city's natural environment and its potential to become a global winter tourism hub.

Despite having only 18 months to prepare for the event, Harbin delivered a successful Games. Fok called it an "absolute miracle" and highlighted the lasting benefits for the local community. "The greatest thing about the Games is that it's a catalyst for change," he said. "All the facilities renovated for the Games are given to the people in Harbin to use, especially the young people."

Fok also commended Hangzhou's meticulous organization of the 2023 Asian Summer Games. He acknowledged the challenges of hosting the Winter Asiad, particularly for athletes from tropical countries. However, he praised Harbin's efforts to provide comfort and hospitality, making it a desirable destination for visitors.

During his visit, Fok explored the city's attractions with his son, Kenneth Fok Kai-kong, vice-president of the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong. He emphasized the importance of cultural exchange alongside sporting events.

Hong Kong sent its largest-ever delegation to the Games, with 74 athletes competing in various winter sports. Fok expressed his hope for increased exchanges between young people from Hong Kong and Harbin, fostering both sporting skills and cultural understanding. He also advocated for greater support for these exchanges.

Sidney K Chu, a Hong Kong skater, exemplifies the benefits of such exchanges. Having trained in Changchun, he gained popularity on Chinese social media platforms for his fluency in the local dialect. In Harbin, he competed in both short-track and speed skating, showcasing the appeal of winter sports to a wider audience.

Fok concluded by emphasizing the importance of sports for all, especially young people. He encouraged everyone to pursue a sport and highlighted the legacy of the Games in improving facilities and promoting a healthy lifestyle. He also looked forward to similar exchanges during the upcoming 15th National Games, co-hosted by Hong Kong, Macao, and Guangdong province.

“It’s great if it boosted pride for some, but how many families truly benefitted from these so-called lasting improvements?”

“Harbin’s potential as a global tourism hub seems overstated. It’s still a niche market for winter sports.”

“This looks more like propaganda than a genuine catalyst for change. Was there any independent review of these renovations?”

“How much of this praise is just political spin? I’m skeptical about the so-called ‘lasting benefits’ for everyday people.”
