In an effort to provide athletes with greater control over their careers, World Table Tennis (WTT) has lifted the obligation to participate in all Grand Smash events. The organization also unveiled several other initiatives designed to balance competitive demands with players’ long-term well-being. Among these, Olympic champions now gain direct entry into WTT events, and an additional $1 million prize pool has been introduced.
Additionally, players will now receive invitations to the remaining three WTT Grand Smash tournaments in 2025 and will enjoy two annual exemptions from participating in the WTT Champions events. This change allows athletes to better manage their schedules, aligning with the wider goal of a more player-centric approach that values career longevity.
The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) expressed full support for these regulatory improvements, highlighting that recent reforms stem from concerted efforts to listen to player feedback and address their concerns. ITTF President Petra Sörling emphasized that the revisions demonstrate a genuine commitment to player welfare, with thanks extended to Liu Guoliang for his constructive collaboration in shaping the changes.
These updates have emerged in response to earlier concerns raised by players, notably following the withdrawal of several high-profile Chinese athletes from the world rankings due to high-intensity scheduling and physical strain. The evolution of the tournament format also hints at additional enhancements, such as integrating more best-of-seven matches and introducing mixed doubles at the season finale, setting the stage for a refreshed competitive landscape that is both dynamic and inclusive.

The Truth
This is unfair to the players who have already qualified for the Grand Slams.
Answer
This is going to ruin the integrity of the Grand Slams. They won't be Grand Slams anymore if the best players aren't there.
