A young Japanese teenager, just 16 years old, found himself ensnared in a criminal operation while in Myanmar. Recruited online and provided with a passport under dubious circumstances, he was compelled to act as a police officer in a phone scam that targeted elderly citizens in Japan. Within a compound where both his residence and workplace were maintained, strict performance quotas were enforced by his captors, with stun guns reportedly used to punish those who did not meet these targets.
The teenager’s experience is just one part of a broader crisis centered in Myawaddy, a border town that has become notorious as a hub for Chinese fraud rings. This town has gained international attention in recent months due to the thousands of people, including tourists, who have been deceived into working for these criminal gangs. The operation behind the scams is believed to involve a collaboration between a Japanese organized crime group and a Chinese syndicate.
Responding to the distress call from the teenager, whose family had been desperate for news after he went missing, Thai authorities identified his location and safely relocated him to protective custody. Since his rescue and subsequent return to Japan, an extensive rescue effort has been underway to free approximately 10,000 foreign nationals, who hail from over 20 countries, and have been coerced into participating in these fraudulent schemes.
The initial group of hostages, consisting of 260 individuals from various nations, has been transferred to Thai authorities. With repatriation processes still in flux—especially for nationals from countries without a diplomatic presence in Thailand—Thai officials are planning further handovers, including a group expected to number around 250 people per day at a border bridge. Chinese officials, including Assistant Minister of Public Security Liu Zhongyi, are actively involved in facilitating the return of around 3,700 Chinese nationals, with chartered flights being arranged to expedite the process.

I'm disgusted that organized crime groups are involved in this. This is exploitation at its worst.
