Trump and Sheinbaum Agree to Pause Tariffs and Discuss Fentanyl and Immigration

In a surprising turn of events, US President Donald Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum have agreed to "immediately pause" the anticipated tariffs for one month and continue negotiations. This decision came after a "very friendly conversation" between the two leaders on Monday.

During their conversation, President Sheinbaum agreed to immediately supply 10,000 Mexican Soldiers on the Border separating Mexico and the United States. These soldiers will be specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl and illegal migrants into the US.

Both presidents also agreed to participate in negotiations headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and high-level Representatives of Mexico. These negotiations will take place over the next month in an attempt to reach a "deal" between the two countries.

This agreement comes after President Trump signed executive orders on Saturday to impose a 25-percent additional tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10-percent tariff hike on imports from China. This decision drew widespread opposition and immediate retaliations, with many fearing the negative impact on the US economy.

The new tariffs would have increased the cost of goods coming from Canada, Mexico, and China, including electronics, toys, shoes, fresh produce, lumber, and cars. This would have put a strain on US consumers and businesses, potentially leading to reduced profits or cuts to protect margins.

Following Trump's announcement, President Sheinbaum instructed the Secretariat of Economy to implement tariff and non-tariff measures to defend Mexico's interests. She also categorically rejected the White House's claims of alliances with criminal organizations and any intention of intervention in Mexican territory.

This agreement between Trump and Sheinbaum offers a glimmer of hope for a resolution to the trade dispute between the two countries. The next month will be crucial as both sides work towards a mutually beneficial agreement.
