Mainland China Condemns Taiwan's Obstruction of Cross-Straits Tourism
A mainland spokesperson on Friday criticized Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities for hindering cross-Straits tourism and other forms of exchange. The spokesperson, Zhu Fenglian, accused the DPP of using weak excuses to obstruct these exchanges, disregarding public opinion and the interests of the island.
Zhu's remarks came in response to Taiwan's recent rejection of inspection tour applications submitted by tourism operators in Eastern Fujian Province and Shanghai Municipality. These applications were submitted shortly after the mainland announced the resumption of Taiwan group tour services for residents of Fujian and Shanghai in January.
Taiwan authorities claimed that affairs related to Taiwan-bound mainland tourism should be discussed first by the Taiwan Strait Tourism Association and the mainland-based Association for Tourism Exchange Across the Taiwan Straits. However, Zhu dismissed this claim as an excuse to hinder mainland tourists from visiting the island. She emphasized that the two organizations can discuss arrangements for cross-Straits tourism after its resumption.
Zhu highlighted the mainland's proactive efforts to restore cross-Straits tourism, noting that the inspection tour applications demonstrate this commitment. She also pointed out that the island's tourism industry and the general public have welcomed this move. However, the DPP authorities' negative stance and attempts to obstruct the move have dampened industry expectations.
Zhu warned that if the DPP authorities continue to obstruct cross-Straits exchange, they will lose public support and face the consequences of their actions.
Meanwhile, Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an expressed regret over the mainland's decision to exclude a Shanghai delegation from the Taipei Lantern Festival. He emphasized the importance of open communication and dialogue to improve cross-Straits relations.
