Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently held discussions with Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri in Beijing. During the meeting, Wang underscored that strengthening ties between China and India is aligned with the core interests of their respective nations and plays an important role in supporting the rights and interests of Global South countries. He recalled the significant meeting last year between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kazan, noting that the consensus reached then has spurred active engagements and a positive momentum in bilateral relations.
Wang emphasized that both nations should view this period as an opportunity to bridge gaps and work on a series of concrete steps aimed at fostering mutual understanding and support. He warned against approaches based on suspicion and alienation, advocating instead for a spirit of cooperativeness that could contribute to the stability and prosperity of both countries and the broader Asian region.
Indian Foreign Secretary Misri echoed these sentiments by noting that, following the Kazan meeting, both parties have already engaged in a series of fruitful dialogues that helped manage differences and kick-start practical collaborations across various sectors. Misri also mentioned that India is prepared to commemorate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations with China and expressed full support for China’s current initiatives within the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.
Experts and diplomats have observed that recent initiatives represent a deliberate effort to stabilize and gradually warm the bilateral relationship through consistent strategic, diplomatic, and sector-specific engagements. Prior to the recent meeting, top-level discussions between Chinese and Indian officials had already been held, reflecting a step-by-step approach to address key issues like direct flights, visa processes, and broader trade concerns, as both countries work to restore and enhance their mutually beneficial relations.
