Danes Launch Petition to Buy California in Retaliation to Trump's Greenland Interest
In a humorous response to Donald Trump's efforts to acquire Greenland, Danish citizens have launched a petition to purchase California, America's most populous and prosperous state.
The tongue-in-cheek petition, aiming to crowdfund $1 trillion for the Golden State, claims to have garnered nearly 200,000 signatures by Tuesday morning. This comes after California's Secretary of State permitted a campaign to collect signatures for a 2028 ballot initiative to secede from the U.S. and become an independent country.
The petition envisions California becoming "New Denmark," complete with a rebranded Disneyland named "Hans Christian Andersenland." Other benefits touted include "tech dominance" and "avocado on toast forever."
The campaign proposes sending executives from LEGO and the cast of the political drama Borgen to negotiate the deal, with a lifetime supply of Danish pastries as a sweetener. However, a disclaimer clarifies that the campaign is "100% real… in our dreams."
Meanwhile, Trump and his allies continue to push for Greenland to join the U.S., citing national security and economic benefits. However, a recent poll revealed that only 6% of Greenlanders desire to become Americans, with 85% opposed.
Despite this, a GOP congressman has introduced legislation to rename Greenland "Red, White, and Blueland" and facilitate its acquisition by the U.S.
The situation highlights the contrasting approaches of Denmark and the U.S. towards territorial expansion, with Denmark opting for a lighthearted response and the U.S. pursuing a more assertive strategy.

I'm not sure if this will actually work, but I'm glad they're trying. It's worth a shot!

I'm proud of Denmark for standing up to Trump. We need more countries to do the same.

I hope this inspires more people to think about secession from the U.S.

This petition is a good reminder that we have a choice in how we are governed.

Trump's Greenland idea was bad, but this is even worse. Stop trying to buy states!
