In an interview with Fox News, President Donald Trump speculated that Ukraine could eventually be aligned with Russia depending on how negotiations unfold. He remarked that, under certain terms, Ukraine might be considered Russian someday, signaling a flexible, albeit controversial, approach to resolving the nearly three-year war with Russia.
Trump also underscored that U.S. support should yield tangible benefits, emphasizing that American financial contributions must be reciprocated. He proposed a deal where Ukraine would provide valuable natural resources—like rare earth minerals—toward an arrangement worth approximately US$500 billion, ensuring that the country’s support did not leave the United States at a disadvantage.
Additionally, Trump confirmed plans to send his special envoy, Keith Kellogg, to Ukraine to help formulate a proposal to halt the fighting. This move comes as Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at a forthcoming security conference, highlighting the urgency of finding a peaceful resolution.
Meanwhile, Ukraine remains cautious about any settlement that lacks strong military and security commitments. Zelenskyy has consistently called for robust guarantees, including measures such as potential NATO membership or peacekeeping forces, to ensure Ukraine does not leave itself vulnerable to future aggression from Russia. His administration is determined that any agreement must secure not only national defense but also the stability of the country's economy and resource sustainability for the broader free world.
